Interim Head of Legal

Job Description

We are working with an NHS organisation who are seeking to appoint an Interim Head of Legal services on an interim basis. The role will be for 3 months initially, will interview and start ASAP.

The role will be at Band 8a/8b depending upon experience and is based in the South East UK with some remote working.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Management of a dedicated legal service, managing a workload of Inquests, clinical and non-clinical claims and healthcare advisory matters;

  • Work closely with instructed solicitors and counsel and NHS Resolution; liaise with HM Coroners and their officers; deal with more complex police enquiries; provide legal advice to staff; assist in the drafting of legal documents; respond to requests for legal advice and provide information for relevant meetings and the Executive team;

  • The post holder will be required to attend court and tribunals on behalf of the Trust and will have line management responsibility for administrative staff within the Legal Team;

  • The post holder will support in ensuring that learning from inquests, claims and other relevant processes is shared Trust wide, working closely with colleagues to triangulate information;

  • Support the wider activities of the Department in particular in the quality agenda, work closely with clinical and corporate services and participate in provide training in relation to inquests and other legal processes as required.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Over 2 years’ experience working within legal services within the NHS;

  • Educated to degree level with legal qualifications;

  • Significant experience in a healthcare legal manager role;

  • Experience in clinical negligence, healthcare law, and personal injury litigation;

  • Experience of liaising with courts/ tribunals and other legal, bodies;

  • Experience of attending and representing Trusts at pre inquest reviews and inquests;

  • Experience of working with NHS Resolution for the management of claims falling under CNST and LTPS.
