Head of Legal Services

Job Description

We are currently working with an NHS organisation based in London, who are recruiting for a Head of Legal Services. The post will be for 3 + months with an hourly rate between £39.99 - £46.47 dependant on experience/ and if you are a qualified solicitor. This role will be working inside IR35 (through an umbrella solution company).

The post holder will manage the legal services function dealing with clinical and nonclinical claims, working closely with instructed solicitors/ barristers and the NHS.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the organisations expert in the management of inquests, supporting witnesses in the drafting of statements and ensuring other documents that may assist the coroner are provided;

  • Manage the medico legal, personal injury and HM Coroner’s Service portfolio;

  • Ensure that all claims against the organisation are properly investigated and reports prepared for the NHS Resolution, in accordance with the NHS Resolution’s Clinical negligence Scheme;

  • Ensure the maintenance of records and databases of all material associated with a claim including expert reports, pleadings, written statements, medical records, schedule of special damages, councils’ opinion etc. and any other relevant documents;

  • Ensure external specialist legal advice/ representation is appropriately sourced, and funded if required;

  • Liaising closely with and advising staff managing the organisations complaints and risk management departments, where there are potential wider legal and clinical or corporate governance issues;

  • Sign off documentation sent to the HM Coroner, and ensure that appropriate documents are sent in a timely manner;

  • Prepare staff involved in the inquest, and identify any issues that may affect the reputation of the organisation;

  • Always ensure confidentiality, only releasing confidential information obtained during employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the data protection;

  • Provide training for clinical and non-clinical staff and disseminating any learning from claims, inquests, and any other relevant cases i.e., child protection.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Must have experience working within the NHS/a healthcare setting;

  • Desirable: Qualified Solicitor;

  • Up to date knowledge and expertise on NHs policies and procedures;

  • Leads on all new claims, responsibility and of the outcome of such claims enabling potential remedial action;

  • Line manage the Legal Assistant & Legal Administrator;

  • Assist and draft the provision of regular reports to relevant committees;

  • Excellent attention to detail, able to write detailed reports.
